India's capital Rises to Dangerous Pollution Post Festival of Lights
As Tuesday dawned residents of this heavily contaminated metropolis were faced with inhaling extremely polluted air that was classified as the "critical" level.
Record-Breaking Pollution Levels
Several parts of the capital showed an AQI exceeding 500, which represents 10x the healthy threshold established by the WHO.
In some locations, readings of dangerous airborne particles soared to of 1,800, amounting to fifteen to twenty times above acceptable limits.
Firecracker Prohibition and Current Policy Shifts
Beginning in 2020, authorities had implemented a total prohibition on the sale and use of pyrotechnics during Diwali due to their major role to the dangerous pollution that blankets the city as colder weather sets in.
Nevertheless in recent months, the recently formed local leadership appealed to the judicial authority to propose a modification of the prohibition.
Officials advocated for allowing "eco-friendly fireworks" – historically criticized by conservation groups as being only approximately one-third lower impact – as a compromise between "tradition and environment".
Court Ruling and Reality
Despite concerns of public health and environmental campaigners, judges agreed to the request, specifying that eco-friendly pyrotechnics could be ignited during specific hours throughout the celebrations.
On Monday night, there was widespread violation of the designated hours across the metropolis, with minimal enforcement regarding whether the fireworks being used were actually the supposedly greener type.
Numerous air quality sensors throughout the capital recorded air quality spiking around late evening to extremely hazardous levels observed during celebrations in at least three years.
Cross-Border Implications
The widespread use of pyrotechnics during the celebrations also initiated a controversy with adjacent the neighboring country, with authorities in Pakistani Punjab partially attributing declining air quality in the city of Lahore on pollutants coming from across the border following the events.
Chronic Environmental Issue
The dangerously high readings of air contamination in the city have remained as a major problem for more than 15 years, with the problem continuing to worsen.
Near Diwali, the levels of toxic airborne contaminants in the atmosphere has been found to spike to 70% higher the worst records ever recorded in China's capital, which was previously considered as the globally most contaminated urban center.
Diverse Pollution Factors
The situation in the capital is caused by a mix of different contributors including automobile exhaust, dust, building projects, garbage fires and pollutants from crop residue ignition in adjacent regions of farming communities.
Throughout these areas, agricultural workers regularly burn crop residue to prepare for next season, producing toxic pollution that becomes contained over the capital as colder air descends.
Public Health and Financial Consequences
The economic and health consequences on the roughly thirty-three million people living in the capital region is enormous, according to multiple research.
The contaminated air leads to high levels of neurological, cardiovascular and lung diseases, and can potentially cause oncological diseases.
Environmental contamination is projected to be accounting for approximately 10k untimely fatalities annually in the capital.
