A bettor earned a substantial sum on the ouster of Nicolás Maduro immediately preceding it was officially announced, sparking debate about whether someone profited from inside knowledge of the US operation.

Sudden Shift in Wagers

Wagers on Polymarket, an online prediction market, that the leader would be no longer in control by the close of the month surged in the hours before President Donald Trump stated on Saturday that the Venezuelan leader had been apprehended.

A particular user, which joined the platform in December and took four positions, all on political events in Venezuela, profited a total of $nearly half a million from a initial bet of over $32,000.

Who placed the bet is a mystery. The anonymous account had only a cryptographic address for identification.

Probability Spikes Before News Break

Trading information shows that users put the odds of the president's removal at just 6.5% in the afternoon of the prior Friday.

However the odds had increased to eleven percent by the end of the day and surged in the early hours of the next day, indicating a sudden change in positions immediately prior to the public announcement was made.

"This particular bet has all the signs of a bet based on inside information," said a financial reform advocate.

A small number of other platform users also earned tens of thousands of dollars from bets on the same outcome.

Legal Questions Grows

Elected officials are beginning to pay attention.

A new rule put forward on Monday seeks to ban government employees from making trades on prediction markets if they have "confidential government knowledge" related to a market.

The Prediction Market Landscape

Prediction markets have grown significantly in the past few years, with traders able to bet on everything from sports to political events.

Prediction markets faced scrutiny under the last presidential term. Yet it has experienced less resistance during the current presidency.

Using confidential knowledge is a crime in the stock market, but there are more ambiguous rules in the event betting space.

An official representative for a competing service said their site "strictly forbids such activities of any form."
